Description

This is a scale model of the MV Kalakala - a vessel with a rich and long history; and one of the most iconic vessels to ever operate in the Puget Sound. Certain details and geometries have been simplified, exaggerated, or omitted to best ensure reliability and ease of print. 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media PROJECT BACKGROUND The MV Kalakala is one of my favorite historical vessels; and I've been wanting to create a model of it for quite some time. I am not that comfortable modelling organic shapes and geometries just yet - so I took this as a good opportunity to practice. HISTORY The MV Kalakala started life as a more traditional, yet still beautiful, steam turbine ferry - the Peralta - in 1926, for service in the San Francisco bay. Much of the Peralta's upper superstructure was destroyed by a fire in 1933. In search of a new flagship, the Puget Sound Navigation Company took everything from below the waterline, and slowly rebuilt it into the famous "art deco" ferry, with the MV Kalakala entering service in 1935. 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media If you're interested in reading about this beautiful ship, Evergreenfleet has a wonderful blog post about it HERE . BUILD TIPS AND DETAILS This model has a lot of fine details and small overhangs. I am decently satisfied with the tolerances and fit of the parts; but ensuring your printer and profiles are well tuned would help the process. The model can be coloured [as shown in the sample prints] with a couple of manual filament layer swaps. No MMU is needed. I recommend printing out all parts beforehand, and dry-fitting everything before final assembly. You will need some super glue to attach the parts together Read through the quick build sheets before starting your build! 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media THANKS & SUPPORT Should you decide to print out this little homage to some historical forms of public transportation - I would love to see your makes of it; and I sincerely hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it!
