Description

This is a new twist for a stand of Frank Deschners popular Designer Lithophane Moon Lamp or My High Definition Remastered Version respectively. I wanted to design a more subtle stand, fitting the moon theme, so I came up with using a “moon rock” instead of conventional feet or another stand design. As a gimmick this stand features a „floating“ effect, meaning the moon is raised from the base, making it appear to be floating. The effect further boosted by printing the bottom bayonet style cap of the moon with transparent filament, giving the light bleed effect you see in the pictures. The base as designed uses the IKEA Svallet (70358487) light fixture , a cheap (4 Euro) option (the lamp shade will be destroyed in the process of removing the light fixture, the cable stays intact, see instructions below). The stand was designed modular, so it should easily be adaptable to any other stand or fixture, as it still uses Frank Deschner's “patented” bayonet lock design. The base is equipped with a simple 17.5mm diameter hole fitting the holder for the moon. If you want to design an own holder, this hole dimension will be your only design constraint to fit any other globe / stand. Happy remixing! The base follows the same „no cord cutting“ approach of the original IKEA Svallet stand by veritas , meaning that there is no need to cut the cord and the cord can be fiddled through the center of the base. The hole used to fit the cord through is then plugged with a printed fitting piece that snaps into place and doubles as a cable channel. Pretty neat. I am using the IKEA Trådfri E14 Multi-Color (70439196) smart lamp. The diffusor needs to be removed from the lamp, in order to fit through the hole of the moon lamp, see instructions below. Print Instructions The base, cap and holder can be printed without support. For the cable channel I would recommend to print it with supports, because it is a pretty small piece, but it should not necessary either. For filament I used PolyMaker's PolyTerra Marbe White PLA fitting the “rock theme” for the base and the cable channel respectively. You can use any infill on those (I used 15%). For the holder and cap, I used SUNLU Transparent PLA to achieve the shine-through / light bleed, that intensifies the “floating effect”. As an infill on those I used 10% infill with a gyroid pattern, which allows for a nice light diffusion. Assembly Instructions First make sure you have all four parts (the base, holder, cap and cable channel) printed: 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media Both the original stand, as well the base I designed have been designed to avoid detaching electrical cable from the bulb socket. To assemble the cap follow the original instructions from the IKEA Svallet stand : Be safe, make sure the Svallet lamp is off and unplugged. Unscrew the screw in the back of the lamp shade. Pull the socket with cable away from the globe, to make more space for pliers. Carefully cut a wider hole, to take the whole bulb socket out (I found it easier to break off pieces of the plastic instead of trying to cut them). Take the printed cap and gently twist it to make space for cable. Push the cable through the cut and place socket in the cutout (it should match the socket profile). Screw the screw back to the bulb socket to secure the cable. Put a bulb into the socket. If you want to use the IKEA Trådfri E14 smart bulb for your lamp, the top cover of the bulb needs to be removed, in order to fit through the hole at the bottom of the moon. To do so take a sharp & thin knife (be careful) and make a deeper and deeper cut along the seam on the bottom of the bulb. The top cover should become loose (there is a little bit of glue between the top cover and the bulb) and with a little bit of twisting you can remove the cover and use the lamp. Now to the assembly of the Floating Moon Rock Base stand itself. This should be your starting point after following the instructions above: 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media Next put the holder that fits into the base onto the cap: 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media Then fiddle the cord through the base: 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media Push the holder into the base and plug the hole using the cable channel: 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media Last attach the moon globe and enjoy .
