Description
Hey! 👋 This is the first release of GridSmith — a modular, snap-fit TTRPG terrain system designed to actually work at the table. Why GridSmith? I’ve printed and used a lot of terrain systems over the years, and kept running into the same problems: Walls are too thick or require extra parts Tiles don’t stay in place Magnets and clips create thicker bases, longer prints, and require extra supplies and labor Layouts are constrained to pre-built shapes Hallways have to be 10' wide Systems try to do everything… and end up doing nothing particularly well GridSmith was built to solve those problems. What Makes This Different True 1x1 system (30mm tiles) Build any layout — including real 5’ hallways, corner doors, and awkward map shapes. Snap-fit base grid (no magnets or clips) Tiles stay in place, but can be rearranged quickly. Playable walls Designed so players can see over walls and move minis easily. Flat, usable surfaces Stairs, floors, and tiles are built for gameplay — not just display. Dual-sided walls One wall tile serves both sides → fewer prints, more flexibility. Works with your existing minis & terrain Standard 1" scale — bring your own furniture, props, and scatter terrain. What Printers? These tiles are designed for basic FDM printers : 0.4mm nozzle 0.2mm layer height PLA / PLA Pro No rafts or supports required You can absolutely get higher detail with finer settings, but the goal was to make this system easy to use—even on older printers. I personally printed everything on a 6-year-old Ender 3. I’ve also had a full set printed on a Bambu P1S with a 0.2 nozzle at 0.08 layer height. What’s Included This free set includes the full Tavern tile system at a lower resolution: Floor Wall (2 orientations) Corner (2 orientations) Curved Wall (2 orientations) Door (2 orientations) Window (2 orientations) Stairs (2 orientations) Trapdoor Hallway (2 orientations) 👉 Everything you need to build a fully functional tavern layout. Why Free? The 64 resolution version is free so you can: Try the system Print it easily on most printers See how it works at your table Higher resolution versions (128 / 256) will be available separately. Feedback Welcome These tiles are considered v1 complete , but I’m actively looking for feedback. If something feels off — fit, scale, usability — I want to hear it. There may be small adjustments over time (especially around tolerances), but the core system is stable and not expected to change significantly. What’s Next? This is just the start. Planned sets include: Dungeon Cave Cobblestone / Streets Sewers and more... All sets will be compatible and mixable within the GridSmith system. Final Note GridSmith is being built in the open — real prints, real testing, real iteration. If you print this, I’d love to see it. Thanks for checking it out 👍 The included _LICENSE.txt governs usage of these files. Redistribution is not permitted.
