Description

Official metric remix of Maff's amazing Netwonian reflector telescope nicknamed “Hadley” . Make sure you go and read his Printables post too, as well as the #hadley-instructions channel on his Discord server , as it includes some extra info about print settings and assembly. A full set of stls are available, along with the full CAD model and a BOM. !!---------- Important Section ----------!! Please print the “Hardware Test Print” first (the arrow on the print faces vertically upwards) If you have tolerance issues either: Edit the variables in the CAD to suit your printer or: Let me know and I will update the stls !!---------- End of Important Section ----------!! Changes The changes I have made are as follows (everything below available as native CAD in the linked Onshape document): Remixed the original CAD to natively support M4 metric hardware Remixed primary mirror cell to use hex bolts inserted through the cell and extending out of the back Remixed the spider hub to match the OD of the secondary mirror holder (to block less light) Added new spider with a single nut slot (to stop nut-alignment issues) and with triple curved vanes using maths from DOI: 10.1117/12.2326923 , with annular apature = 0.2 and vane thickness = 0.01D (1.2mm) Changed the nut slots to hexagonal to more securely capture the nuts Whole new focuser here Remixed the Double finderscope mount for M4 metric Remixed the Secondary holder remix for an M4 hex bolt Made new thumbscrews for the secondary collimation assembly Personal Mods There are also a number of custom mods which deviate from “Hadley but Metric” which I have included in a separate assembly in the CAD in case anyone wants them. Added test prints for the 12mm and M4 hardware New options for the focuser which incorporate a 45 degree thread profile allowing for better printing and smoother actions. These have been moved over to a new Printables post (this one is already getting too long). Remixed the UTA and LTA to accept a “sleeve”. This is useful if you want to print theese components in not-black but don't want to paint them. The sleeves themselves are printed as single walls in vase mode in black. Again both the original (remixed to metric) and sleeve versions, of the UTA and LTA, are provided. Added CAD mockups for the Celestron red-dot and generic 6x30 and 9x50 finder scopes I also printed and used several other mods and add-ons (both for Hadley and otherwise), listed below: Mirror covers - fit perfectly on 12mm rods (a very satisying snap) Center spot finder - extremely useful for collimation Collimation eyepiece - similarly useful for collimation Open Ocular 2.0 - an open source smartphone mount scope adapter Mount The original square rocker-frame you see in the pictures isn't sufficiently stiff to enjoy using Hadley. The best options are: 1) build a wooden frame like in the original post, 2) build a frame with aluminium-extrusions and a printed bearing mount, 3) use a vastly improved printed mount like Ivan's or Marci's . Print settings VzBoT 330 eSun PLA+ 3 walls, 3 top and bottom layers 0.6mm walls, 0.3mm layers (you can use whatever you want here, just remember, smaller layers are stronger, but take longer to print) 20% grid infill (any infill type that is strong is all directions will be fine e.g. grid, gyroid, triangles) Purchased components Mirror set - Any 900/114 mirror set Eyepiece (1) - Svbony 6mm (150x at 900mm focal length) Eyepiece (2) - Svbony 25mm (36x at 900mm focal length) Finderscope (1) - Celestron 51630 Star Pointer (so easy to set up and works great) Finderscope (2) - Right-angle RACI 9x50 Finderscope , a 6x30 is also very common (I got mine used from eBay) Spider The triple-curved-vane spider should (according to the paper I used to make it) give a noticeable “improvement” to the diffraction pattern. The original triple-straight-vane spider has a vane width of 0.035D, compared to the curved version with 0.01D. The change should be something like in the image below from figures 16 and 17 in the paper (showing straight vanes with 0.05D and 0.02D compared with a 0.01D curved vane) 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media Print orientations The stls are not orientated in the print direction but most slicers will let you place them on a selected surface. Use the image below for reference. There are also images which show the assembly of the primary and secondary mirror cells as they differ slightly from Maff's original version. (Please excuse the poor prints, the black filament I had on hand was old and wet) 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media Assembly - LTA 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media Assembly - UTA 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media 📷 Image redacted — claim this model to add your own media You will notice that lots of the things I have done are available in other remixes, there are a few reasons for this: I started this project before most of the other remixes were released and have been using it to learn Onshape The model is reasonably parametric so if you (for example) wanted the 12mm rod holes to be 12.7mm for printing you can change one number and the whole model “should” be updated I wanted a central resource for my metric version of the CAD so I didn't have to rely on various stls I wanted it to be done “my way”, never satisfied with parts which would print and function perfectly well but might have some odd geometry errors Metric Hadley BOM UTA Assy M4 x 8mm socket head cap screw3M4 x 12mm socket head cap screw8M4 x 16mm socket head cap screw4M4 x 50mm hex bolt (40mm also works, you might need to shorten the springs)4M4 hex nut21M4 nyloc nut1M4 dome nut (optional)3Spring - at least 4.5mm ID, ~10mm long1 LTA Assy M4 x 12mm socket head cap screw6M4 x 50mm hex-head bolt3M4 hex nut6M4 nyloc nut3Spring - at least 4.5mm ID, ~15mm long3 Bearing Interface Assy M4 x 12mm socket head cap screw3M4 x 20mm socket head cap screw8M4 x 25mm socket head cap screw2M4 hex nut13 Misc - Sights, Dovetail Scope mount M4 x 12mm socket head cap screw6M4 hex nut6 Totals M4 x 8mm socket head cap screw3M4 x 12mm socket head cap screw23M4 x 16mm socket head cap screw4M4 x 20mm socket head cap screw8M4 x 25mm socket head cap screw2M4 x 50mm hex-head bolt7M4 hex nut46M4 nyloc nut4M4 dome nut (optional)312mm round bar x 1m3Spring - at least 4.5mm ID, ~10mm long1Spring - at least 4.5mm ID, ~15mm long3 The End.
