Description
I wanted to add lights to my truck camper's hitch step for a safer and more legal driving setup. The lights needed to be moveable so that we could use the step at camp without tripping on them. Adding off-the-shelf magnetic tow lights for turn/running/brake was easy. However, there was no good place on the step for a screw-in license plate light and no off-the-shelf-magnetic options. My solution is this magnetic mounting bracket for a Kenway license plate light from Harbor Freight (SKU: 59655). The light is just wired into the tow lights (SKU: 64282). The light itself is attached to the bracket with M4 bolts and matching nylock nuts. A wire passthrough allows the light to sit flush against the bracket and squish the factory gasket. The bracket sticks to the step using 6 12x4mm magnets that I had on hand, scavenged from something else. The pocket that holds the magnets is a little undersized vertically in order to help keep the magnets squished inside when moving the bracket. The bottom of the pocket is only a couple layers thick, but this should be no issue for TPU, nor does it affect the magnetic grip. Once stuck to the step, the magnets aren't going anywhere, but I did include a plug for the magnet slot. I printed this at 101% in X and Z and 100% in Y to make a tight fit. If you can't find 12x4mm magnets, I bet 12x3 will work fine, especially with the plug. This setup is working great after over 1400 miles (the plug even survived!). When we park the camper and need to use the step, it's easy to move all three lights off the top and stick them to the sides or back.
