Magnets are optional. The centers take 8x3mm magnets. The six outside magnets are 3mm. If you install the 3mm magnets, make sure you do those first and it makes installation easier. Make sure you get all the magnets oriented correctly and the same for each side otherwise some will repel each other. I used a dab of CA glue for each magnet. With all the magnets installed and no batteries, it becomes a bit of a incremental spinner that's fun to play with. I'm not sure if all magnets are exactly the same dimensions, so I'll leave links to the ones I use.
